Knowledge is the core belief of MiST. Through knowledge and education one can improve the local health and socio-economic status of a population.
Medical and Nursing Educataion
MiST provides Surgery on the ground, but also teaches and trains local medics and allied health care professionals with development of local hospital infrastructure - this is what makes MiST unique in the world of international medical support.
MiST invest skills into educating people in areas where resources, skills, manpower may be scarce. Through education, and a developing vision, a country can create assets in their people, their medical resources, their future.
MiST has helped develop medical infrastructure in areas of Pakistan, Sudan, India and Palestine.
MiST and Edge Hill University
We have created a unique partnership to ensure longevity and quality of our education programmes. Working closely with lecturers at Edge Hill University, Manchester, we can design a refined and specialist programme ensuring Health care workers receive an exceptional medical and nursing education.
Speciality
MiST identify lead surgeons in Orthopaedics including sub-specialities of trauma, spine, paediatrics, upper limb, joint arthroplasty, and limb reconstructive surgery. These surgeons are taught surgical techniques at a MiST base hospital, in the country MiST is present. Similarly, the allied health care professionals are taught at these base hospitals through continuous professional development modules, top-up degrees, diplomas and hands-on training.
The ideology is that in turn, these locally trained surgical mentors will pass on their skills and knowledge to their juniors. Local surgeons will also be exposed to a different way of working and patient pathways introduced by MiST. It is hoped these good practices will be transferred to their own base hospitals in the region.
The Video Conference
As part of our education programmes, MiST lecturers may talk on medical topics to students in host countries. Typically, after an hour including Q&A across the countries, the MiST unit follow up with practical, hands-on workshops. In Sudan, live surgery is video streamed to several universities.
The video conference creates access to a larger pool of medical experts from around the world to input into a high quality education.
Diploma and Masters
Individualized diploma programmes taught through e-learning, local mentors and MiST units assess the candidates, deliver tutorials and act as a continuous quality assurance for the diploma courses.
MiST intends to teach a Masters in Orthopaedics (MCh Ortho) covering all aspects of Orthopaedics to help the candidates prepare for their Board exit examinations. Each MiST Unit will run a monthly tutorial according to the preset syllabus, over the duration of the course. The degree will have quality assurance and accreditation as one would have in the host country, England. This will assure the candidates of the robustness of the Degree and its subsequent recognition.
These courses will bring the Orthopaedic surgical fraternity of each country up-to-date with the surgical developments and techniques of how to perform procedures safely and introduction of new trauma devices.
Centres Of Excellence
MiST propose to develop ‘Centres of Excellence’ and 'Level 1 Trauma Centres' in some of the poorest countries in the world.
