Our Projects

Around The World

Natural disasters regularly occur around the world, including tsunamis, mud slides, hurricanes and earthquakes. Other disasters may be ‘man-made’ but need a similar emergency response.
Medical teams and international aid are essential tools to helping disaster victims.

Our History

The first team of MiST medic-volunteers set off from Manchester in response to the 2005 Pakistan earthquake. The earthquake measured 7.6 on the Richter scale and lasted 73 seconds, taking 86,000 lives and leaving 120,000 injured.
Such intense disasters situations destroy communities, physical infrastructure with a devastating human count. With a lack of hospitals and surgical experience available, injured patients received little or no care.

MiST sent teams of experienced orthopaedic and plastic surgeons to care for severely injured patients. Each team transferred patient care to the next team to ensure continuity of care.

Sustainable Solutions

MiST, like other medical charities sought sustainable solutions. We developed a long-term plan with the Pakistani government and private funding to set up a Level 1 trauma and limb reconstruction centre in Pakistan. (Trauma relates to serious and life-threatening physical injuries).

MiST surgeons at the centre performed limb correction surgery using ring fixators. They will also taught local medical and nursing staff to use ring fixators and such, they now run the surgical centre.
One of those surgeons was awarded with 'Best International Young Surgeon, 2005'.

International Medical Teams

MiST now have teams based in India, UK, Greece, South Africa and Pakistan.
