Sudan

Sudan Crisis

In Sudan, drought has caused the desert to spread. Modern weaponry has flooded the region. Allocation of water and land is unequal.
A country facing mass starvation, being geographically isolated and devastated by conflict dating back to the early 1980s.
Many have experienced fighting, looting and burning of their villages, millions live in squalid camps for displaced people and rely on International aid.

MiST in Sudan

MiST medics led by Sharaf Mohamed, have been performing complex limb surgery and training local medics since 2006.

The team have collaborated with Soba University Hospital and University of Khartoum to deliver their work.

Frequent Trips

Since 2005 MiST have continued to travel to Sudan every 2/3 months to to perform vital operations for those unable afford private healthcare fees.
The patients receive regular follow up by Mr. Yasir Hamad, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Soba.

“It is major surgery that these people simply can’t afford so we’ll keep doing it for as long as possible. Soba hospital have been very helpful in allowing MiST to use their premises to do this work."

Training Techniques

Traditional teaching such as lectures, ward rounds and hand-on workshops are combined with newer techniques.
MiST surgeons performed several knee replacement operations with live transmission through video link to the clinical education centre at Soba University Hospital and the main lecture room at the University of Khartoum Medical School.

Training courses for Registrars & Consultants, orthopaedic registrars, theatre scrub nurses and physiotherapists from several hospitals.

Investment In People

One local theatre scrub nurse, Miss Sumya Nowaar, (pictured above) completed initial training, followed on with 3 months training in UK hospitals. Sumya is now working back in Soba University hospital and helped training the local scrub nurses in her hospital theatre.

The team from UK included:
Mr. Sharaf Mohamed - Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon.

We would like to thank Mr Suliman Hussien, Director General of Soba University Hospital and Mr. Samir Shaheen the head of the orthopaedic department at Khartoum University and all the medical and nursing staff in the hospital for making our mission a success.

Future Vision

We are also planning to raise funds local and international bodies to complete an unfinished building at Soba University hospital to host the orthopaedic department or a national institute for trauma and orthopaedic.

Sponsorship

“Sponsorship money is very important and the more we get the more we can keep doing it.” said Sharaf.
“We already give up our annual leave for the trip so sponsorship helps towards the cost of travel."

Sponsorship was provided by Wright Medical office in Cairo/Dubai and Corin Group, who manufacturer medical equipment.
MD Iain Dunbar said the company were delighted to help them with their humanitarian work.
“It’s very rewarding to see their dedication and devotion to helping other people who are less fortunate.” said Iain.
Corin UK also sponsored some of the travel expenses of the team.
